Treatment for Anxiety, Fears & Panic Attacks

“It is not the event, but rather our interpretation of it that causes our emotional reaction.” Gwen Pasin

Fact
Anxiety is the most common mental disorder in Australia; and about 10% of Australians will be affected by an anxiety disorder at some point in their life.

Anxiety or Fear is a normal response to a present or imagined threat. A mild fear can be helpful as it can enable us to respond quickly when faced with a dangerous situation and alerts us in difficult situations, like exams, job interviews, public speaking. However, excessive fear may lead to people to being so afraid they will not stand up and make a speech, they may find they go blank, forget their lines and are rendered speechless.

How do you know if your Anxiety is a problem? The short answer is if your anxiety interferes for your normal life.  If your anxiety is out of proportion to the situation you are experiencing and/or persists in the absence of a threat, you may need professional help. For example, if you worry about events months ahead or are experiencing anxiety long after the danger has passed; or it stops you from doing the things you want to do.

Anxiety can be categorized into the following areas:

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder (excessive worrying)
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (this condition may develop after a traumatic life event)
  • Panic Disorder (anxiety attacks)
  • Specific Phobias (heights, dogs, spiders, needles, flying)
  • Social Anxiety (fear of being negatively judged by others)
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder (excessive preoccupation with one’s appearance, or an imagined defect in one’s appearance)
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (trichotillomania)

Many people cope with their symptoms by avoiding situations or objects which trigger their fear. However, avoidance is only a short term solution to your anxiety disorder and does not address the root of your problem.  If you do not address this disorder, it can generalize into other situations.  For example, if you avoid supermarkets because of panic attacks, then you decide to avoid shopping centres, stadiums, theatres and you could end up leading a very restricted life.
